Weigela is a dense, rounded, deciduous shrub that typically grows to 6-10’ tall and may spread over time up to 12’ wide. Its branches are somewhat coarse and will arch towards the ground on mature shrubs. In spring, funnel-shaped flowers (up to 1.25” long) bloom profusely, with a sparse and scattered repeat bloom often occurring in mid to late summer. The flowers are attractive to pollinators like bees and hummingbirds. The leaves of weigela shrubs range from elliptic to obovate (up to 4.5” long) with serrate margins and retain good color throughout the growing season. While the most prolific blooming occurs when planted in full sun, most weigela are tolerant of partial shade.
