Boxwoods, Latin name buxus, are a group of evergreen shrubs that are most often used as hedges and topiaries. These sturdy shrubs hold their color year-round and can be vigorously pruned annually into different shapes. Their small, elliptic to ovate leaves are generally dark green with a yellow-green underside while new growth emerges a brighter green. Boxwoods' versatility and hardiness make them an excellent choice for home gardens and professional landscape design. They are often used in foundation plantings and as small to medium-sized hedges. Annual pruning should be done after the last frost to maintain a desired shape or size. Keep your boxwoods happy and healthy by planting them in partially shaded areas with well-drained soils. Allow ample room for airflow to prevent boxwood blight.
