The Rose of Sharon, Latin name hibiscus syriacus, is a large, upright shrub that is full of large, colorful, tropical blooms during the summer season. This shrub is popular as a container plant, garden specimen, border, hedge, or entryway markers in both private and commercial landscapes. These plants were bred to maximize tolerance in colder climates, and some cultivars have little to no seedlings to prevent invasive overgrowth. Pruning should be done in spring to maintain shape but is not required. The flowers come in a variety pf pinks, purples, white, red, and blue, often featuring a red eye. They grow best in full sun and moist, well-drained soil.
