The Clethra (alnifolia) is a gorgeous, native, and fragrant deciduous shrub, with long blooms. Along with being native, Clethra is also great for attracting pollinators like bees, birds, and butterflies. The bloom time is in mid to late summer (July to August), the blooms lasting about 4 to 6 weeks. Clethra typically grows 3 - 6’ depending on the exact variety, some varieties have been seen to reach 8’ although it is not frequently seen. Clethra is a low maintenances shrub that doesn’t require much other than dead heading, which is only if desired. This deciduous shrub can survive in full sun to part shade and has a slow growth rate.
