Red Maples, Latin name acer rubrum, are a medium-sized, deciduous tree. They typically grow 40-60’ tall with a rounded to oval crown. In spring, all aspects of new growth emerge either red or red-tinged, including: leaves, leafstalks, twigs, flowers, and fruit. Leaves are generally medium to dark green above and gray green below during summer. The vibrance of a red maple's fall color depends on the species. Flowers are primarily male, female or monoecious and appear in late winter to early spring (March-April) before the leaves begin to grow. The 'fruit' is a papery, two-winged samara.
