Weeping Japanese Maples, Latin name acer palmatum var. dissectum, are smaller, shrubby trees that often have drooping or cascading branches. They are native to Japan, Korea and China. This plant is generally rounded to broad in form, often with low branching and rarely matures to more than 12' tall with a larger spread. Its palmate, red or green leaves each have 7-11 deeply incised lobes and are deeply cut to the base of the leaf. These dissected-leaf shrubs are commonly called laceleaf Japanese maple, cutleaf Japanese maple or threadleaf Japanese maple. Weeping Japanese maples are prized for their fall colors, including: shades of yellow, red-violet, and bronze. Cultivars (often grafted) are quite variable.
