Japanese Holly

Ilex crenata
Japanese hollies, also known as boxleaf hollies, are a striking choice that provides year-round interest and is great for foundation plantings or hedges. These dense, evergreen shrubs vary in size and their leaves are small, often glossy like boxwood leaves. These hollies produce blueish black fruits but do not have ornamental value as they are usually hidden by the leaves. Japanese hollies are dioecious, meaning their forms have male flowers on one plant and females on another. A male pollinator is required for berry production on a female plant. The ornamental berries are attractive to wildlife as a food source. Japanese hollies thrive best in moist, well-drained, acidic soils, planted in full sun. They make great hedges, borders, foundation plantings, or mass plantings.
