American hollies, Latin name ilex opaca, are a larger, tree form and are great for foundation plantings or hedges. They are the only native holly to feature the spiny leaves and bright red berries found in Asian or English varieties. American hollies are dioecious, meaning they have male flowers on one plant and females on another. A male pollinator is required for berry production on a female plant.
