While florida and kousa dogwoods are most commonly used in landscapes, there are other varieties and hybrid cultivars. Hybrids were specifically developed to have superior hardiness, disease resistance, or more prolific blooms. These dogwoods also have the typical short trunks and crowns of spreading or nearly horizontal branches. Dogwood flowers are actually specialized leaves called 'bracts' that differ in color to the regular foliage. Their ornamental appeal makes dogwoods a popular deciduous tree choice for any landscape.
