The flowering dogwood, Latin name cornus florida, is often considered the most spectacular of native flowering trees. These single or multi-stemmed trees feature a spreading crown and long-lasting, showy, white or pink spring blooms which are not actually flowers but specialized bracts. Following the bloom period are clusters of red berry capsules, which attract wildlife but are not edible to people. Dogwood trees typically have short trunks and graceful, nearly horizontal, tiered branches. Their oblong, ovate, green leaves turn various shades or red and violet in fall. This deciduous tree is a popular choice for any landscape with its multi-seasonal ornamental appeal.
