Beech

Fagus
The American beech is easily recognized by its thin, smooth, light gray bark, which it retains throughout its "mature" years. These trees are slow growing; beeches can live for three to four hundred years and reach heights of eighty feet with a diameter in excess of three feet. The American beech is commonly found in sites that have moist soils, especially along streams and creeks, in bottom lands, and in shaded, protected ravines. Beeches will do well in most areas with adequate soil moisture and can grow in soils that are acidic, loamy, neutral, sandy, or slightly alkaline. They have a low salt tolerance but will tolerate moderate droughts. Its root system is shallow and wide-spreading, which allows it to adapt well to wet conditions. Beeches are able to sprout new seedlings from its roots which can lead to dense thickets of seedlings around older, undisturbed trees.
