Azaleas are flowering shrubs in the genus Rhododendron and can be evergreen or deciduous. The main differences between normal rhododendrons and azaleas are their overall structure. Azaleas are a smaller, compact bush whose leaves are small and narrow. Their flowers are more funnel-shaped and have less stamens than those on rhododendrons, whose flowers are more bell-shaped. Azaleas bloom in the spring, often reblooming in early July, and their flowers often last several weeks. They make great foundation, grouping, or border plants in your landscape.
Pruning & Care: Azaleas grow on old wood, so trim immediately after spring flowering so you do not affect the next bud cycle. Pruning the plant late in the season can result in clipping off the next bud cycle. Likes moist to well-drained soils. While many varieties are heat tolerant, azaleas grow best in areas with filtered sun or partial shade.
